Following two of the quietest months of the year, August can be an interesting month with a total of 181 species having been recorded during this month. The numbers and variety of waders increase, as do the numbers of migrating warblers, Yellow Wagtails, Whinchat and Wheatears. Mediterranean and Yellow-legged Gulls are expected. Rarities in August have included Slavonian Grebe (1996), Spoonbill (2019), Great White Egrets (2019,2020,2021), Red Crested Pochard (1998), Goshawk, Osprey, Caspian Gull (2006), Sabine’s Gull, Roseate Terns (2016), Red-necked Phalarope (2014), Kentish Plover, White-rumped Sandpiper (1995, 2001), Grey Phalarope, Wryneck (1976,1984, 2003, 2010 and 2014), Rose-coloured Starling (2020), Marsh Warbler (2009) and Red-backed Shrike (2003).



August 2022


31st August
A day of sunny spells and a North East breeze. The juvenile Curlew Sandpiper, 150 Ringed Plovers, 125 Dunlin, 5 Turnstones, 52 Curlew, 8+ Little Egrets, 2 Canada Geese, 13 Shelduck and a Whinchat were reported from Severn Beach this morning. Early morning birders reported 2 flyover Greenshank, 7 Tree Pipits, 2 Coal Tits, single Redstart and Garden Warbler at Aust Cliff/services. Just 14 Black-tailed Godwits, 15 Redshank, a Snipe and 15 Teal were worthy of a mention from a 5 minute early afternoon visit to Pilning Wetland. Nearby at New Passage, another 59 Black-tailed Godwits, 50 Redshank, 40 Oystercatchers, 80 Curlew, 55 Turnstones, 3 Ringed Plover a single Dunlin, 2 Grey Herons, a Little Egret, 10 Canada Geese, 2 Shelduck, 20 Teal, single Sparrowhawk and Kestrel were reported.

30th August
Morning reports from Severn Beach included a juvenile Curlew Sandpiper, 200 Ringed Plover, 140 Dunlin, 40 Curlew, 15 Oystercatchers, 11 Little Egrets, a Grey Heron, a 2nd summer Mediterranean Gull, 2 Canada Geese, 13 Shelduck and 9 Wheatears. Just 9 Black-tailed Godwits, 20 Curlew, 5 Oystercatchers, 8 Ringed Plover, single Dunlin and Common Sandpiper were seen early morning from New Passage. Another 55 Black-tailed Godwits, 220 Redshank, 26 Lapwings, 2 Dunlin, 2 Snipe, a Little Egret, 2 Grey Herons, 23 Canada Geese, 3 Mute Swans, 30 Teal, 400 Black-headed Gulls, single Cetti’s Warbler and Grey Wagtail were present at Pining Wetland. 29th August
Combined reports from Severn Beach included 2 Black-tailed Godwits, 120 Curlew, 203 Ringed Plover, 130 Dunlin, 4 Turnstones, 10 Oystercatchers, 4 Little Egrets, 2 Grey Herons, 8 Canada Geese, 9 Shelduck, single Peregrine, Wheatear, Lesser Whitethroat, Yellow Wagtail, Grey Wagtail, Coal Tit and Willow Warbler. Early morning highlights from Aust Cliff/services involved 5 flyby Black-tailed Godwits, 3 Ravens, 2 Redstarts and a Tree Pipit. A brief visit to Pilning Wetland produced just 3 Black-tailed Godwits, 2 Green Sandpipers, 4 Snipe, 24 Lapwings, 70 Canada Geese and 30 Teal. A rare dash off the patch to Chipping Sodbury Common, an excellent site just 25 miles from home, to see the County’s 1st record of Steppe Grey Shrike.

28th August
A brief morning visit to Pilning Wetland produced 2 Greenshank, 22 Black-tailed Godwits, 170 Redshank, 2 Dunlin, a Green Sandpiper, 5 Snipe, 2 Grey Herons, 110 Canada Geese, 24 Teal, single Kestrel, Sparrowhawk, Grey Wagtail and Yellow Wagtail. Early evening reports from New Passage included the 22 Black-tailed Godwits, 60 Redshank, 190+ Curlew, 65 Oystercatchers, single Little Egret and Grey Heron, 16 Shelduck, 15 Teal and a Wheatear. Combined reports from the Severn Beach shore involved an Avocet, 275 Ringed Plover, 140 Dunlin, 4 Turnstones, 10 Little Egrets, 2 Grey Herons, a Mediterranean Gull, a Peregrine and 2 Wheatears. Nearby 2 Grey Herons, a Coot and 2 well grown young, 2 Grey Herons, single Kestrel and Grey Wagtail were seen in the Orchard Pools area.

27th August
An early morning scan of the Severn Beach shore produced the Kentish Plover again, seen in flight close to shore and calling as it headed North East. Also present were the first 2 juvenile Curlew Sandpipers of the year, a Knot, 287 Ringed Plover, 117 Dunlin, 14 Whimbrel, 150 Curlew, 3 Redshank, 6 Turnstones, 6 Little Egrets, 70 Canada Geese and 5 Shelduck. A very brief visit to Pilning Wetland produced 23 Black-tailed Godwits, 55 Redshank, 2 Green Sandpipers, 4 Snipe, 4 Lapwings, a Little Egret, 2 Grey Herons, 23 Teal, 2 Tufted Duck, single Grey Wagtail and Yellow Wagtail. Reports from New Passage included a Black-tailed Godwit, 160 Redshank, a Ringed Plover, 2 Grey Herons, a Little Egret, 3 Shelduck and 20 Teal. Two Peregrines were seen at Aust Warth.

26th August
Reports from Pilning Wetland included 22 Black-tailed Godwits, 65 Redshank, 24 Lapwings, a Green Sandpiper, 2 Snipe, a Grey Heron, 13 Canada Geese, a Gadwall, 8 Teal, single Redstart, Sparrowhawk and Grey Wagtail. At least 200 Ringed Plovers, 35 Dunlin, 4 Turnstones, 70 Curlew, 35 Oystercatchers, a Great White Egret, 11 Little Egrets, a Grey Heron and an adult Mediterranean Gull were seen from the Severn Beach shore this morning. The 6th Severnside record of Kentish Plover was reported at Severn Beach this evening.

25th August
A cloudy, damp and humid morning with some sunshine in the afternoon. Combined reports from Aust cliff/services included 2 Ravens, 7 Canada Geese, 4 Pheasants, 2 Kestrels, 13 Chiffchaffs, 9 Blackcaps and a Kestrel. At least 16 Black-tailed Godwits, 22 Lapwings, 7 Snipe, 2 Green Sandpipers, 3 Grey Herons, 14 Teal, 2 Gadwall, single Shoveler, Wigeon, Cetti’s Warbler, Grey Wagtail, Kestrel and 2 Whinchats were reported from Pilning Wetland. Four Wheatears and 2 Yellow Wagtails were reported on Northwick Warth.

24th August
Another wet and cloudy day. Combined reports from Pilning Wetland involved 17 Black-tailed Godwits, 56 Redshank, 19 Lapwings, 3 Green Sandpipers, 4 Snipe, a Little Egret, 2 Grey Herons, 9 Canada Geese, 3 Mute Swans, 9 Gadwall, 8 Teal, 4 Redstarts, 3 Yellow Wagtails, single Spotted Flycatcher, Cetti’s Warbler, Grey Wagtail, Sparrowhawk and Kestrel. A late afternoon high tide visit to the Severn Beach shore produced 450 Ringed Plover, 290 Dunlin, 6 Turnstones, 3 Common Sandpipers, 100 Curlews, 16 Little Egrets, 3 Grey Herons, 400 Black-headed Gulls, 2 Great Black-backed Gulls, 7 Shelduck, single Kestrel and Sparrowhawk.

23rd August
A wet and humid morning. Combined reports from Pilning Wetland included 21 Black-tailed Godwits, 2 Green Sandpipers, 2 Snipe, 18 Lapwing, 3 Grey Herons, a squealing Water Rail, 5 Mute Swans, 2 female Tufted Duck, 2 Gadwall, 13 Teal, 2 Ravens, single female/juvenile Pied Flycatcher, Redstart, Whitethroat, Willow Warbler and Coal Tit. A brief early morning visit to New Passage on the falling tide produced 150 Redshank, 2 Dunlin, 2 Curlew, 18 Teal, 60 Mallard and 6 Shelduck. An early evening, high tide, scan of the shore at Severn Beach produced at least 500 Ringed Plovers, 250 Dunlin, 2 Turnstones, 90 Curlew, a Great White Egret, 11 Little Egrets, 3 Grey Herons and 320 Black-headed Gulls.

22nd August
A grey and wet day with light rain/drizzle. Combined reports from the New Passage/Pilning Wetland area involved 17 Black-tailed Godwits, 250+ Redshank, 26 Lapwings, 7 Ringed Plover, 10 Turnstones, 6 Curlew, 4 Green Sandpipers, 2 Common Sandpipers, 8 Snipe, 2 Little Egret, 2 Grey Herons, 3 Shelduck, 2 Gadwall, 22 Teal, a Kestrel, 2 Sand Martins, 2 Grey Wagtails, single Yellow Wagtail and Cetti’s Warbler. At least 400 Ringed Plovers, 200 Dunlin, a Knot, 18 Turnstones, 100 Curlew, 35 Oystercatchers, 5 Canada Geese, 12 Shelduck, 14 Little Egrets, 3 Grey Herons and a Sparrowhawk were seen from the Severn Beach shore.

21st August
Combined reports from the Pilning Wetland/Northwick Warth area included 4 Black-tailed Godwits, 190 Redshank, 2 Green Sandpipers, 3 Little Egrets, 2 Grey Herons, 44 Canada Geese, 2 Mute Swans, 4 Gadwall, 22 Teal, a drake Tufted Duck, 2 Sparrowhawks, single Kestrel, Grey Wagtail and Wheatear. A mixed flock of 550 waders at Severn Beach included a Knot, a Redshank, at least 300 Ringed Plover, lots of Dunlin, along with 2 Little Egrets and a fly by Hobby.

20th August
Some heavy rain showers in the morning, a sunny and breezy afternoon. A late morning visit to Pilning Wetland produced 2 Black-tailed Godwits, 160 Redshank, 2 Green Sandpipers, 3 Snipe, 4 Lapwing, a Little Egret, 2 Grey Herons, 63 Canada Geese, 3 Mute Swans, a Shelduck, 4 Gadwall, the first 3 returning Wigeon, 11 Teal, single Spotted Flycatcher, Yellow Wagtail and Grey Wagtail and nearby another 12 Black-tailed Godwits (including a colour-ringed individual), just 2 Redshank, 2 Oystercatchers, single Curlew and Little Egret, 30 Canada Geese, 4 Teal and 300 Black-headed Gulls were seen from New Passage. At least 84 Turnstones, 200 Ringed Plovers, 250 Dunlin and at least one adult Mediterranean Gull were seen at Severn Beach early afternoon.

19th August
A breezy day after overnight rain. A brief visit to Pilning Wetland produced 2 Black-tailed Godwits, 170 Redshank, single Green Sandpiper and Snipe, 2 Little Egrets, 3 Grey Herons, 65 Canada Geese, 16 Teal and 5 Gadwall. It was quiet at New Passage with just single Knot and Curlew, 5 Oystercatchers, 2 Little Egrets, a Grey Heron, 20 Canada Geese, 3 Shelduck, 9 Teal, 70 Black Headed Gulls and a Coal Tit of note reported on a visit 3 hours before high tide.

18th August
A visit to New Passage produced 2 adult Mediterranean Gulls, 9 Ringed Plover, just 2 Dunlin, 24 Turnstones, 8 Oystercatchers, 10 Curlew, 4 Little Egrets, 3 Grey Herons, 50 Canada Geese, 10 Shelduck, 90 Mallard, 4 Teal, single Yellow Wagtail, Kestrel and Hobby. Reports from Pilning Wetland included 4 Black-tailed Godwits, 3 Green Sandpipers, 227 Redshank, 24 Lapwings, a Snipe, 2 Grey Herons, a Little Egret, 7 Gadwall, 8 Teal, single Yellow Wagtail, Kingfisher and Kestrel. A visit to the Severn Beach early afternoon on the falling tide produced 100 Ringed Plover, 100 Dunlin, 30 Turnstones, 8 Oystercatchers and 12 Little Egrets. A Grey Seal was lingering off the sea wall at New Passage.

17th August
A cloudy and cooler day with a North East breeze. A morning visit to Pilning Wetland produced the Wood Sandpiper, 4 Green Sandpipers, a Common Sandpiper, 18 Black-tailed Godwits, 200 Redshank, 35 Lapwings, a Little Egret, 2 Grey Herons, 20 Canada Geese, 100 Mallard, 9 Gadwall, 14 Teal, a Kestrel and a Cetti’s Warbler.

A humid morning, rain by late afternoon and a North East breeze. Combined reports from the Pilning Wetland/ New Passage area included the Wood Sandpiper, a Greenshank, 3 Green Sandpipers, 2 Snipe, 28 Black-tailed Godwits, 19 Dunlin, 3 Ringed Plover, 31 Turnstones, 180 Redshank, 150 Curlew, 55 Oystercatchers, 45 Lapwings, 6 Little Egrets, 3 Grey Herons, 70 Canada Geese, 6 Gadwall, 7 Shelduck, 24 Teal, a juvenile Yellow-legged Gull, 200 Black-headed Gulls, 2 Grey Wagtails, 40 Pied Wagtails, 6 Yellow Wagtails, 6 Sand Martins, a late Swift, a singing Cetti’s Warbler, single Sparrowhawk and Kestrel.

A cooler day with some brief rain showers. Combined reports from Pilning Wetland included a Wood Sandpiper, a Greenshank, 8 Black-tailed Godwits, 2 Green Sandpipers, a Common Sandpiper, 27 Dunlin, a Ringed Plover, 43 Lapwings, 230 Redshank, 2 Grey Herons, 28 Canada Geese, 25+ Teal, 3 Gadwall, a Shelduck, 3 Mute Swans, 200 Black-headed Gulls, 4 Yellow Wagtails, a Grey Wagtail, single Cetti’s Warbler and Kestrel. Reports from New Passage included a Golden Plover, 4 Black-tailed Godwits, 13 Ringed Plover, 50 Dunlin, 40+ Turnstones, 50 Redshank, 230 Curlew, 85 Oystercatchers, a Grey Heron, 4 Little Egrets, 38 Canada Geese, 600 Black-headed Gulls, 4 Yellow Wagtails, 2 Wheatears, 300 Starlings and a Coal Tit. A walk along the sea wall South of Severn Beach produced at least 10 Little Egrets, 3 Grey Herons, a flock of 150 Goldfinches, 3 Whitethroats, Blackcaps, single Kestrel and Sparrowhawk.

14th August
Another 33°C day. Early morning reports from Aust Cliff/services included 19 Canada Geese, 4 Stock Doves, 4 Oystercatchers, 8 Curlew, single Little Egret, Grey Heron and Sparrowhawk, 3 Green Woodpeckers, 2 Ravens,  a Coal Tit, 2 Spotted Flycatchers, a Lesser Whitethroat, 2 Grey Wagtails and a Tree Pipit. Highlights from Severn Beach this morning included a Yellow-legged Gull, 10 Cormorants, just 3 Shelduck, single Ringed Plover and 8 Dunlin. A Mediterranean Gull, 9 Black-tailed Godwits, 60 Oystercatchers, a Grey Plover, 20 Lapwing, 20 Ringed Plover, 3 Whimbrel, 130 Curlew, 40 Turnstones, 35 Dunlin, 2 Common Sandpipers, 154 Redshank, single Little Egret, Grey Heron, Kestrel, Peregrine, Coal Tit, 3 Wheatears, 6 Yellow Wagtails, a Grey Wagtail and 5 Tree Pipits were seen at New Passage. A brief morning visit to Pilning Wetland produced 5 Black-tailed Godwits, 3 Green Sandpipers, 145 Redshank, 54 Lapwings, 3 Dunlin, a Ringed Plover, 2 Grey Herons, a Little Egret, 54 Canada Geese, 5+ Gadwall, 18 Teal, single Grey Wagtail, Yellow Wagtail and Kestrel.

13th August
A very hot day, reaching 35°C. The first Pied Flycatcher of the year was found at Aust Cliff/sevices where other migrants included a Spotted Flycatcher, 4 Tree Pipits, 3 Willow Warblers, single Coal Tit, Whitethroat and Swift plus a Raven, Sparrowhawk and Grey Wagtail. Combined reports from Pilning Wetland included 2 Black-tailed Godwits, 137 Redshank, 5 Green Sandpipers, 19 Dunlin, 23 Lapwings, 3 Grey Herons, 18 Canada Geese, single Shelduck and Shoveler, 20 Gadwall, 13 Teal, 3 Kestrels, single Redstart, Grey Wagtail and Cetti’s Warbler. Late afternoon reports from New Passage involved 29 Canada Geese, 5 Shelduck, 42 Oystercatchers, 9 Lapwings, 120 Curlew, 7 Turnstones, 3 Dunlin, 4 Redshank, 3 Little Egrets and 600 Black-headed Gulls. A morning high tide visit to Severn Beach produced 2 Whimbrel, 100 Ringed Plover, 97 Dunlin, 3 Turnstones, 76 Curlew, 57 Oystercatchers, 3 Little Egrets, 4 Canada Geese and 6 Shelduck.

12th August
An even hotter 34°C day. A brief afternoon visit to Pilning Wetland produced 17 Black-tailed Godwits, 3+ Green Sandpipers, a Common Sandpiper, 3 Snipe, 142 Redshank, 26 Lapwing, 2 Grey Herons, 40 Canada Geese, 10 Teal, 40 Mallard, 3 Gadwall,  a Grey Wagtail and 2 Swifts, Combined reports from Severn Beach involved just 9 Ringed Plover, 12 Dunlin, 6 Curlew, 10 Shelduck from the shore and a Redstart in the railway scrub.

11th August
A very hot day with the afternoon temperature reaching at least 33°C. A brief evening visit to Pilning Wetland coinciding with the high tide produced at least 6 Green Sandpipers, 55 Redshank, 10 Dunlin, a Turnstone and a Snipe, 2 Grey Herons, a Little Egret, 16 Teal, 3 Gadwall, 4 Canada Geese and a Yellow Wagtail. A mixed flock of at least 150 Dunlin/Ringed Plover were seen on the evening high tide at Severn Beach.

10th August
The temperature climbed to 31°C. A morning visit to Pilning Wetland produced 3 Green Sandpipers, a Common Sandpiper, 24 Lapwings, 9 Little Egrets, 3 Grey Herons, 13 Teal, 3 Gadwall and a Sparrowhawk. Reports from New Passage included 25 Turnstones, 35 Dunlin, 50 Redshank, 20 Curlew and 200 Black-headed Gulls. Sightings from Severn Beach involved 120 Ringed Plover, 110 Dunlin and 450 Black-headed Gulls.

9th August
It remained hot (29°C) and sunny. A brief morning visit to Pilning Wetland produced a Green Sandpiper, 31 Lapwings, 2 Grey Herons, 60 Canada Geese, 11 Teal, 5 Gadwall, single Cetti’s Warbler, Coal Tit, Spotted Flycatcher, Kestrel and Peregrine. Combined reports from New Passage involved a Knot, 40 Turnstones, 40 Dunlin, 2 Ringed Plover, 35 Redshank, 20 Curlew, 4 Oystercatchers, 2 Little Egrets, a Grey Heron, 20 Canada Geese, 10 Shelduck and 350 Black-headed Gulls. The late  afternoon high tide at Severn Beach produced 85 Ringed Plover, 110 Dunlin, 4 Turnstones, a Redshank, 3 Grey Herons and 300+ Black-headed Gulls.

A hot (27°C ) day and predicted to get even hotter. The adult Curlew Sandpiper, drake Common Scoter, 49 Turnstones, 45 Dunlin, 10 Curlew, 170 Redshank, 5 Little Egrets and a Grey Heron were seen from New Passage and nearby a juvenile Little Ringed Plover, 160 Redshank, one Dunlin, 39 Lapwings, a Little Egret, 2 Grey Herons, 80 Canada Geese, 3 Mute Swans, 2 Gadwall, 4 Teal, 2 Swifts and a Kingfisher were seen on Pilning Wetland. At least 90 Dunlin, 3 Whimbrel, 20 Ringed Plover and a Turnstone were seen this afternoon at Severn Beach.

Another hot and sunny day. Combined reports from New Passage included the Curlew Sandpiper, a Common Sandpiper, 173 Redshank, 63 Turnstones, 40 Dunlin, 20 Oystercatchers, 20 Curlew, a juvenile Mediterranean Gull, 140 Black-headed Gulls, 2 Little Egrets, a Grey Heron, 4 Common Scoters, 16 Shelduck, 60 Canada Geese, single Red Kite and Hobby. Sightings from the mostly dry Pilning Wetland included a juvenile Little Ringed Plover, 4 Green Sandpipers, 28 Lapwings, 190 Redshank, just 2 Dunlin, a Little Egret, 2 Grey Herons, 38 Canada Geese, a Teal, 2 Gadwall, 3 Mute Swans, 4+ Little Grebes and a Kingfisher. A Great White Egret and a Spotted Flycatcher were seen at Severn Beach in the Orchard Pools area.

6th August
A warm and sunny day. The adult Curlew Sandpiper was reported again at New Passage where other sightings on a late morning visit included 4 Black-tailed Godwits, just 10 Dunlin, 30 Redshank, 25 Curlew, 20 Oystercatchers, a Little Egret and 120 Black-headed Gulls. Reports from Pilning Wetland involved 2 Green Sandpipers, 2 juvenile Little Ringed Plovers, 15 Lapwings, a Little Egret, 100 Canada Geese, 4 Teal, 5 Gadwall, 5 Little Grebes, Reed Warblers, Sedge Warblers, a Whitethroat and a Swift. A scan of the shoreline at Severn Beach produced 18 Ringed Plover, 29 Dunlin, 10 Turnstones, 3 Redshank, 90 Curlew and 2 Little Egrets.

The Curlew Sandpiper, 40 Turnstones, 200 Redshank, 12 Lapwings, 140 Dunlin, 8 Curlew, 20 Oystercatchers, a Common Sandpiper, 2 Grey Herons, 2 Little Egrets, 150 Canada Geese, 40 Shelduck, 80 Mallard, a Gadwall, 350 Black-headed Gulls, single Peregrine and Kestrel were seen in the New Passage/Pilning Wetland area. A male Redstart, a Yellow Wagtail and a Raven were present at Aust Cliff/Services late morning.

A morning visit to New Passage produced the adult Curlew Sandpiper, 7 Black-tailed Godwits, 40 Turnstones, 200 Redshank, 130+ Dunlin, 15 Oystercatchers, 2 Curlew, single Little Egret and Grey Heron, an adult Mediterranean Gull, 130 Black-headed Gulls, 30 Canada Geese and 15 Shelduck. Pilning Wetland was quiet with just 3 Black-tailed Godwits of note. A Great White Egret and a Little Egret were seen at the Orchard Pools in Severn Beach.

3rd August
A wet start to the day turning warm and sunny in the afternoon. Combined visits to New Passage produced the adult Curlew Sandpiper, 180+ Dunlin, 70 Redshank, 35 Turnstones, 60 Curlew, 25 Oystercatchers, single Great White Egret (flew low down river) and Little Egret, 40 Canada Geese, 20 Shelduck, 450 Black-headed Gulls and a Kingfisher. Nearby a juvenile Mediterranean Gull, 5 Black-tailed Godwits, single Green Sandpiper and Common Sandpiper, 10 Redshank, 50 Dunlin, 21 Lapwings, an Oystercatcher, 3 Little Egrets, a Grey Heron, 140 Black-headed Gulls, 8 Canada Geese, 8 Gadwall, 2 Teal, a Whinchat and a Kestrel were seen on Pilning Wetland.

2nd August
A wet morning and breezy all day. A late morning visit to Pilning Wetland produced the second adult Curlew Sandpiper of the year, 10 Black-tailed Godwits, 36 Redshank, 34 Dunlin, 5 Lapwings, single Green Sandpiper, Little Egret and Grey Heron, 150 Black-headed Gulls, the usual Mallard with a Teal and a Gadwall. The Curlew Sandpiper was relocated nearby at New Passage with 130 Dunlin, 50 Redshank, 21 Turnstones, 35 Oystercatchers and 44 Curlew.

A quiet start to the month with just a Green Sandpiper, 37 Lapwings, 2 Gadwall and a Whinchat worth a mention on a brief visit to Pilning Wetland.
